Shortlisted Civil / Commercial Mediator (National Mediation Awards) 2020
Guest Lecturer at the University of Exeter and the University of Hull
Addressed, as the first speaker, The Houses of Oireachtas, Ireland on the reading of the Mediation Bill in May 2012
I have developed my expertise in mediation and ADR over the last 25 years. During this time I spent 13 years with The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and its subsidiary IDRS Limited incorporating The City Disputes Panel; 7 years at The Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) and 2 years with consumer dispute resolution bodies, including ombudsmen. I held Executive Director roles within all organisations and was CEDR’s first Global Group Director of Dispute Resolution.
I am a regular speaker at conferences and events and an experienced mediator skills trainer. I am a Guest Lecturer at The University of Exeter and The University of Hull. I have worked on ADR related projects in 22 countries.
I have mediated more than 100 times, with claims ranging from £500 to £30m, and co-mediated on cases with a value of up to £300m. I was accredited by CIArb in 2001 and by CEDR in 2008.
I am also a member of The Civil Mediation Council and The Federation of Small Businesses. Between 2010 and 2018 I was a Statutory Member of CEDR. I am a Registered Mediator.
My mediation style has been referred to as “relaxed but active”. I place importance on building rapport with the parties and putting them at ease, before the mediation day itself if possible. I have had significant success mediating where strong personalities on either side have clashed. This has been by building an environment in which emotions can be released without derailing chances of settlement. Though I am relaxed and easy to get along with, I can be tough when required.
Being a qualified lead mediator skills trainer has kept me up to date with new methods and new approaches. This has made me a better mediator and I am always striving to improve.
