General Information

John Gray is a barrister, accreditated mediator and Fee-paid Judge of the First-tier Tribunal.

John splits his time between acting as a barrister in independent practice (so undertaking advocacy and advisory work on a referral basis from law firms), as a Director of a Legal Disciplinary Practice (LDP) (fulfilling the role of both solicitor and barrister in a 'Law Firm') and as a Fee-paid Judge of the First-tier Tribunal.

In both roles as a barrister in Chambers and within the LDP, John has a busy civil litigation practice and has appeared in Court thousands of times over the last 18 years.  As a barrister, it is an essential part of John's skill set to be able to gain and master expert subject knowledge very quickly. He is therefore comfortable mediating disputes in a wide range of areas from construction, to partnership to contractual disputes.

As a Fee-paid Judge of the First-tier Tribunal, assigned to the Health, Education and Social Care (HESC) Chamber, John is ‘ticketed’ to sit in the Mental Health Tribunal.

In terms of his legal practice, John primarily practices in professional negligence litigation, clinical negligence litigation and serious personal injury (life changing or fatal accidents).  John has broad experience in medical law which began with his masters degree in the subject.  He is regularly instructed in clinical negligence cases involving surgical and pharmaceutical negligence, misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis, inappropriate treatment and lack of consent. He also undertakes cases involving allied professions including nurse practitioners, dentists, etc.  He has represented doctors before the General Medical Council. His medical law expertise is also recognised in the academic world . Over the years he has lectured to government lawyers in Kuala Lumpur, co-organised and chaired at a British Academy Conference, lectured to 200 orthopaedic surgeons at their Annual Conference and to solicitors on professional negligence in clinical negligence work at a Action Victims Medical Accidents conference. John is regularly instructed in matters of professional negligence especially those involving solicitors and surveyors. Many of his cases have involved complex issues of causation and limitation. John also undertakes work other civil / commercial work including: Contractual Disputes, Sale of Goods; and Supply of Goods and Services.

For a number of years at the start of his career John undertook criminal work alongside his civil practice. Even when he ceased general criminal work John remained, until the Panel’s abolition, a member of the Attorney-General’s Unified List of Prosecuting Advocates prosecuting on behalf of government departments. He is therefore at ease defending corporate and individual clients against regulatory prosecutions.

John was an early adopter of the concept of mediation and undertook training as a mediator with the Academy of Experts, London over 10 years ago. In 2017 he undertook and passed the week long Civil Mediation Council accredited mediator training and assessment at the University of Central Lancashire.

Before joining chambers, John was employed in legal roles in Sydney, Australia and within HM Customs & Excise.
