General Information

Hilary believes that almost every dispute can be settled through mediation, whatever the issues, however complex and however firmly ‘at war’ the parties appear to be.
During her many years as a national newspaper journalist, a magistrate, solicitor and complaints’ chief, she has seen at first hand how frustratingly slow, expensive and downright unpleasant legal processes are for those involved. She has learned, by contrast, the instant relief and rewards of a mediated agreement.
Hilary paused her work of advising clients in civil and employment disputes, and pro-bono work in the family courts, to train in mediation in all types of civil and commercial disputes. She went on to train further in employment matters.

She believes the key to resolving seemingly insoluble cases is to listen to each of the parties’ accounts and problems, dig below the surfaces if necessary, encourage people to see the big picture by putting some details aside and focussing forwards not backwards.

While she is a mature woman, she is a ‘young’ mediator, one without preconceptions and she will approach each mediation as a unique challenge.

Hilary has excellent people skills honed through coaxing interviewees of all sorts of for newspaper articles and later from talking to clients who seek legal advice. Until the end of 2017 she worked in a large media organisation where there was a constant need to investigate the facts of complaints and to avoid long-lasting hostilities and hurt feelings. Without tact, polite persistence and a sense of humour, countless sets of teeth would still be gnashing and legal fees would still be mounting.

Her mediating method is to keep all parties focussed on what they can agree might be the most reasonable ‘next step’ until they reach an agreement.  Her legal training keeps her aware of the need for complete confidentiality.

Hilary prepares for each case by studying any material available, checking any relevant, underlying legal principle which the parties may have already explored, then introduces herself to the parties by email or telephone once a mediation date and venue has been arranged.

Hilary lives in London and is willing to travel in and around greater London and the home counties to mediations.
Hilary's fees as a junior mediator are negotiable depending on the case and the parties’ financial situation. Please speak to the clerks on 01823 704099.

Hilary has had a long marriage to a journalist. She has three adult children (a journalist, a lawyer and a psychotherapist) and five grandchildren whom she sees regularly. They wreck her tidy home but play an important part in keeping her down-to-earth and in touch with new trends.
