Profile

General Information

Peter joined Clerksroom in October 2018, having spent over 14 years as a Solicitor and more recently, Solicitor-Advocate.

A dual-qualified Barrister and Solicitor, Peter resigned from his position as Director with niche clinical negligence firm, Longden Walker & Renney, in 2017 to set up his own sole practice and legal consultancy, Inquest Legal Ltd.

Having completed his training contract with global law practice, Eversheds, Peter went on to specialise in both Claimant and Defendant clinical negligence litigation, working for national and international firms Irwin Mitchell and DAC Beachcroft.

With in-depth experience of both the Claimant and Defendant Medical Malpractice legal sector, Peter understands the needs of litigants on both sides, the importance of achieving the best commercial outcomes for clients, as well as the expectations of solicitors instructing Counsel.

Peter is a specialist clinical negligence counsel, with more than 14 years' previous experience in this area as a Solicitor.  He is also developing his practice to include a wide range of personal injury matters including, but not limited to, stage 3 hearings, disposal hearings, interlocutory hearings and applications, as well as small claims and fast-track trials.  Peter hopes to shortly become Public Access Accredited and Licensed to Conduct Litigation at the Bar.

During his career, Peter has succesfully recovered millions of pounds in damages for Claimants in clinical negligence matters.  He has also been instructed on behalf of large NHS Foundation Trusts, and private GPs, Consultants and Dentists in the defence of complex clinical claims.  Whilst in employed private practice, Peter was previously a Trustee, and later Chairman of an award-winning local charity, the North East Special Needs Network.

Peter's Defendant experience has also included time on secondment with the NHS Litigation Authority and as Legal Services Manager at a local NHS Trust.  He has provided talks and seminars on medical law and clinical negligence to nursing and medical students, to GPs and to senior clinicians and managers at local NHS Trusts.  With a particular interest in inquests and coronial law, Peter has represented both claimant and defendant clients at complex medical inquests in Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Middlesbrough and Carlisle Coroners' Courts.

Clinical Background / Experience

Before qualifying as a lawyer, Peter worked as a State Registered Paramedic.  Peter was (in the early 1990s) one of the youngest Paramedics in the UK and predominantly worked for the North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust.  He has delivered babies, and has experience of providing advanced adult and paediatric life support (intubation, cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, drug and intravenous therapy) in the most diverse of scenarios - including at multi-vehicle road traffic accidents, industrial accidents and even murder and attempted murder scenes.  Whilst working for the North East Ambulance Service, Peter received formal recognition from both doctors and Trust management for saving life.  Before leaving the Trust, Peter represented the service in a fly-on-the-wall documentary on Sky TV: 'Rescue Medics' and completed a Bachelor of Health Science Degree.  Peter's final degree dissertation resulted in immediate Trust-wide change to the cardiac arrest drug protocol - in part, influenced by Peter's experience of working overseas as a Paramedic in the USA, Middle and Far East, including a year working as a Paramedic at the Royal Brunei Polo Club, for the Sultan of Brunei.
