General Information

Having specialised in employment law for over 20 years, Terence worked for a solicitors firm before being called to the Bar and is therefore aware of the needs and restrictions on his Instructing Solicitors.  Both his solicitor and lay clients appreciate Terence’s straightforward style and rational approach, where he gives clear jargon free advice to clients at the outset so that they may make informed decisions which can save time and costs. Renowned for his thoroughness, Terence is skilled at quickly getting to the key issues in complex legally challenging employment cases.

Terence’s clients range from major private and public sector organisations to individual employees and directors and he has particular experience working for owner managed business/ SMEs, the NHS, local authorities, educational bodies, banking / finance, engineering, charities and professional service practices and finds his understanding of these sectors beneficial to his clients. Terence’s first career was as a research and development engineer and the combination of these two different careers enables him to relate to an office workplace and an industrial setting.

Terence is regularly instructed on a wide spectrum of employment issues and has advocacy experience in all types of single and multi-day hearings including Employment Tribunals, EAT and the High and County Courts, where he acts on behalf of both Respondents and Claimants.

He has experience in constructive dismissal, unfair dismissal, wrongful dismissal, redundancy, working time regulations, breach of contract, public interest disclosure, sex discrimination, race discrimination, disability discrimination, age discrimination, employee status, case management hearings, preliminary hearings, judicial mediation and ACAS mediation.

Terence has acted in a number of high profile cases in discrimination and in general employment matters. Examples include:

  • Instructed on behalf of a director of a fitness company with settlement being reached at £165,000.
  • Instructed when an Asian woman made a race discrimination claim against a local authority college.
  • Instructed when a claim for work related stress and bullying was made against a multi-national bank.
  • Instructed when a sex discrimination claim was made against a government funded institution.
  • Instructed on behalf of a Black woman in her claim against the MOD for constructive dismissal and race discrimination.
  • Instructed when a whistle-blowing claim was made against a charitable trust.
  • Instructed in a sexual orientation claim against the MOD.
  • Instructed when a Disability Discrimination claim was made against a NHS Hospital Trust.
  • Defending a GP practice against claims of Disability Discrimination.
  • Claims involving the enforceability and validity of restrictive covenants in employment contracts.
  • Defending status enquiries into the employment status of persons by the Inland Revenue.

As well as representing clients in Court, Terence also undertakes non-contentious consultation and drafting of employment law related documentation including contracts of employment, collective agreements, restrictive covenants, compromise agreements and sub-contractor agreements.

Terence does not see the winning of a case at all costs as being the benchmark in all situations and has a considered and conciliatory approach.  An example of this is a comment he received, via his Instructing Solicitor, from a director of a multinational corporation in a commercial dispute he undertook.  “Terence made all the points that we wanted at the trial without labouring any particular point and also without trying to humiliate our opponents’ witnesses.  Because of the way Terence handled the case not only did we prevail but we also managed to keep our client.”

Reported Case:

Julian White v Bristol Rugby Limited [2002] IRLR 204

Terence also undertakes other areas of law including; contract disputes, debt recovery and other general common law including Personal Injury. Please contact his clerks who will be able to assist.
