Professional background
As an entrepreneurial solicitor, Roger understands what motivates business people; he has considerable experience of commercial deal construction and negotiation.
Wide-ranging experience as a non-contentious property lawyer has taught him that the collaborative approach gets deals done.
Established in 2008, his commercial mediator business has a reputation for significant success across a diverse range of cases.
Roger says:
“While the need for comprehensive legal knowledge and experience is undisputed, successful mediation is ultimately all about understanding how to deal with people.
“You need to analyse the facts that could point to a litigation outcome, and also understand and manage the expectations of the participants, in order to find the more cost-effective, commercial and sensible solutions that mediation can bring.
“I put considerable effort into preparing for my mediation work, ensuring that not only do I completely understand the ins and outs of each case, but I also contact all parties in advance, in order to set them on the right track to think about possible solutions with a more open mind. I aim to encourage participants to look beyond grievances and start considering options that would enable them to move on to a successful resolution.
“My role is to remain impartial, calm and detached, while also being approachable and easygoing, in order to build trust and create the right atmosphere for negotiation. I believe I am a proactive team player, able to build rapport between disengaged parties and get them to focus on what they have in common, rather than their differences.
“Mediation is in my nature: I’ve discovered a real passion for helping people find solutions to commercial problems that they can’t resolve on their own. I’m a conciliator and enjoy bringing people together, negotiating with honesty and integrity to help people to listen , conclude and move on.
Recent feedback
“Roger was excellent and we are pleased we chose an experienced property lawyer as this certainly gave me and my clients the confidence of knowing that he was on top of his briefing papers and the law.”
"He adopted a commercial approach rather than being bogged down in peripheral issues"
"Good overall manner : good communication skills"“
When difficulties arose towards the end of the scheduled session, Roger calmly and patiently continued to go to and fro between the parties’ houses for a further three hours, without putting anyone under any time pressure, until a settlement was reached and the loose ends tied up. The confidence he conveyed that a resolution was possible went a long way towards achieving this outcome.”
