General Information

John's practice includes the following areas of specialism:

  • shareholder, director and partnership disputes; and
  • all aspects of recruitment law.

John regularly acts for and against employment agencies and employment businesses, has previously worked in-house at one of the largest medical recruitment businesses in the UK, and lectures regularly on legal issues of interest to the recruitment industry.

He has practised law on three continents, has some 2 decades of experience in the field of dispute resolution, and has been ranked repeatedly as a leading lawyer by the Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 directories.

John is a partner and Head of Dispute Resotuion at Longmores Solicitors LLP in Hertford.

In addition to his work on recruitment matters, John also acts for clients in disputes of the following kinds:

  • unlawful competition such as theft of confidential information or breach of employee restrictive covenants/implied contractual terms
  • shareholder disputes esp. unfair prejudice petitions
  • copyright infringment disputes; and
  • commercial contract disputes.

John’s experience as an advocate in the courtroom and representing clients at mediations has convinced him that mediation is the preferable option for all the parties to a dispute in almost every case. Litigation in England and Wales is simply too costly to be a viable option for most individuals and SMEs. Larger businesses may be able to afford to litigate but it is still likely to provide a poor return on the required investment of time and money. Mediation is cost effective and opens the door to the possibility of creative settlement on terms that no court could order.

A graduate of the basic and advanced modules of the long-established Harvard Negotiation Institute at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, John is committed to alternative dispute resolution and fascinated by negotiation theory and the psychology of disputes.
