Profile

General Information

After Call, Stephen practised in Family Law in London for some years in a leading Family Law set, and then became the in-house legal adviser in a corporate finance firm.  During this time he dealt with the legal aspects of over 100 company acquisitions and mergers.  In 1997 he returned to the West Country where he now deals with a range of legal matters including;-

- Family Law

- Corporate Law (particularly the buying and selling of companies)

- Partnerships

- Road Traffic Accidents

- Personal Injury Claims

- Probate

- Neighbour disputes/Planning

Stephen has Public Access Accreditation and can accept instructions without the need for a solicitor.

Family Law

Stephen has acted in all aspects family law, including acting for parties seeking divorce, financial provision and suitable access to children orders.  Stephen has also acted in difficult cases where the respondent husband or wife is overseas and is uncooperative or cannot be contacted, and when one parent wishes to take a child out of the jurisdiction against the wishes of the other parent.

A key interest for Stephen is matrimonial finance.  His experience in business is often very useful in dealing with such disputes, particularly when one of the parties owns a company, and the value of which has to be assessed.

In family disputes Stephen’s realistic and “commercial” approach can be very helpful to the parties.  He is well aware that matrimonial disputes can severely deplete the assets of most families unless great care is taken, and he is often able to make the process less contentious and expensive.

Corporate/Business Law

Stephen has acted for many owners of companies who are selling their businesses, and regularly lectures solicitors at seminars on the process of buying or selling companies.  In particular, Stephen is very experienced in the drafting of sale agreements and in securing the effectiveness of warranties and indemnities.

Partnership disputes are a particular interest, and Stephen is experienced both in the litigation and the avoidance of such disputes.

Personal Injury/ Road Traffic Accidents

Litigation involving personal injury claims is an important part of Stephen’s practice, and he has experience of a diverse range of claims in this area of law.

Stephen is always willing to discuss a case, and will usually consider accepting a case on a Conditional Fee basis.

Although he is based in Taunton, Stephen is happy to travel to any part of the UK.

SERVICES:

Please see “profile” tab for description of the legal services provided by this barrister.

We aim to complete and return all paperwork within 14 days (2 weeks) of receipt if no specific deadline is provided. We can work to much faster timescales if requested or we can agree a specific target date for each individual circumstance. We will always advise at the outset if counsel is unable to meet any deadline.

Each barrister has a standard hourly rate for their work. The individual hourly rate can be agreed when instructions are acknowledged if preferred. We welcome early discussion as to the suitability of a specific barrister for a specific case. The right barrister will have the relevant expertise to deal with the case but will not be too junior, or too senior depending on the complexities.

We aim to allocate all cases to the correct level of experience & seniority which we believe will prove most to be the most cost effective solution for our clients.

If, due to urgency, we allocate paperwork to a more senior member of Clerksroom, we will charge the appropriate hourly rate for the work, not for the barrister. We welcome early discussion to ensure the correct fee is applied to the case at the outset.
