Melissa joined Clerksroom in May 2014 after completing pupillage at a common law set of chambers in London. Prior to becoming a barrister, Melissa spent a number of years working as a news journalist in London and Moscow. As a result, she has considerable communication skills and brings a wealth of experience from her former career.

Information Law

Melissa’s practice includes all areas of information law. Her previous career as a journalist and her experience in both the criminal and civil courts puts her in a unique position to advise clients and understand their needs. Melissa  represents claimants and defendants in all areas of this field, including claims relating to privacy, confidence, defamation, data protection, freedom of information, harassment, contempt, and reporting restrictions.

Personal Injury

Melissa received rigorous training in high value personal injury litigation. She provides advocacy and written advices in all areas of personal injury claims, including road traffic and workplace accidents, occupier’s liability claims, and fatal accident claims. She also has experience in claims involving deaths in custody, clinical negligence, and historic child sex abuse. Melissa has represented bereaved families in the Coroner’s courts.

She has been instructed by the Ministry of Defence to provide a disclosure review and merits assessment of a personal injury and human rights claim arising out of the Iraq War.  She was part of the Kenya Emergency Litigation Team.

Interests

Melissa has a particular interest in cases with an international aspect. In 2010, she was an intern at the International Criminal Court for the Office of the Prosecutor, working on the prosecution of Kenyan government officials. She has also undertaken a considerable amount of international pro bono work in cases involving political prisoners, torture, freedom of speech, election transparency, and human rights abuses.

Melissa is public access accredited and can be instructed directly by members of the public and companies in suitable cases.
